Is Your Data Secure?

Many of us assume that our computers and servers are made up of computer chips that will last a lifetime. We fail to realize that the disks that hold our data are mechanical devices and our data is accessed by moving mechanical arm. The average failure rate of disk and tape drives is 100%. All storage drives will eventually fail. It may be in the next few days or months or after 10 years or more.

Beyond system failures, software errors and viruses can corrupt our data. There is a 30% chance that you will have a corrupted word processing, data, or other file within a one year time frame. We have all heard about a company that had a disastrous failure of their server or that a power failure corrupted some of their files. Often, these errors are in client or billing records or documents that we don’t use every day and it may not be discovered for several days or weeks or more that the data is no longer usable.

Today’s storage systems store 50 times as much data than was stored a decade ago. Increased dependence on computers and the greatly increased amounts of data stored amplify the impact of data loss. Backup copies must be made of not only the current data, but also of various periods. This provides the capability to restore the data when there is a failure of the entire system and to restore files, billing, accounting, and data base files when the damage may have occurred days or weeks before and was not been immediately discovered.
