The Microsoft Server 2008 R2 is an excellent solution for fast file and print sharing and system backup. The Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2008 integrates the Microsoft Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2007 into a single solution at an affordable price. The Exchange Server 2007 delivers greater mobility without sacrificing performance or security. It is an ideal platform for e-mail, Internet connectivity, remote access and support for mobile devices with built-in security, anywhere access to e-mails and mobile messaging with faster performance, and operational efficiencies.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Microsoft Small Business Server to the Rescue

Our client, a busy accounting firm was plagued with software running at a crawl and lack of disk space. Their backup was taking over a half day and they were experiencing frequent crashes. The need for higher email volume, more storage, and improved security was going to make matters worse, not better.

Stepping up to the 64-bit Microsoft Server 2008 gave the firm the fast performance for their Time Matters® client management system, the time to backup was reduced to a manageable 4 hours, and they were able to expand their use of the Internet and e-mail and remote access in a more secure environment. The new server also provided room for growth of their files and the performance for their increased use of the Internet and e-mail. And the frequent crashes and the workstations slowdowns have been eliminated.

The upgrade from their existing server to their new server was done over a weekend without any interruption to the firm’s normal operations. The transition was accomplished using the Swing Migration so that no changes were required to the workstations to operate with the new Small Business Server. We maintained the operation of the old server so that it would be available in the event of any unforeseen problems. But, as expected, there were no problems and the transition of their applications and files to the new server was seamless.

The business of a small property management company with a peer-to-peer network was growing and they needed the increased performance and storage provided by a file server for their files and accounting data bases. But, they could not afford the normal hardware, software, and labor costs for a typical file server that would give them. Their increased use of email and Internet further aggravated the problem. The low cost Microsoft Foundation Server proved to be an ideal solution with faster speed and more storage for the Property Management and Asset software and for their increased use of email and Internet.

The Foundation Server provided great results within their limited budget. The firm was now well positioned for future growth. The firm was no longer plagued with very slow access to their client files and they now had lots of room to expand their client and accounting data base files. They were able to expand their use of the Internet and e-mail and remote access in a more secure environment. They were now well positioned for the future and kept costs within their budget.

The proven and reliable technology of Windows Server Foundation provide a low-cost foundation to run most small-business applications. It’s an affordable platform for the core portfolio of IT capabilities, including file and print sharing, remote access and security. A simple and familiar Windows experience makes it easy for organizations to get up and running.

The Foundation Server supports systems with 2 GB of memory and 500 GB of disk space. It runs all Windows Server applications, including backup, anti-virus and other security tools. It includes licenses for 15 users with no additional client access licenses so that a small business does not have to get more licenses when they add 5 or 10 more users.

As the heart of a true local area network, Windows Server Foundation lets employees exchange data securely, without requiring e-mail or the Internet access. Additionally, Windows Server Foundation provides an easy upgrade path to higher-end versions of Windows Server, so your IT solution can grow as your business grows.

Windows Server Foundation can grow along with your businesses, providing the ability to upgrade to a higher-capability edition of Windows Server as needed. Easy availability of skilled manpower, compatibility with most hardware devices, and the peace of mind gained from running a genuine Windows-based server helps you achieve the highest return on investment.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Faster Processing than Windows 2003 and Windows 2000 Server Systems,

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard is the new Microsoft 64-bit server system and it much faster than the older 32-bit Windows server systems. It processes more data per clock cycle and offers direct access to more virtual and physical memory than 32-bit systems which results in further performance advantages. It is the most robust Windows Server operating system to date.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Web, Virtualization, Security, Reliability, and Productivity

With built-in, enhanced Web capabilities and included virtualization technology, Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard is designed to increase the reliability and flexibility of your server infrastructure while helping save time and reduce costs.

Enhanced security features help protect your data and network, and provide you with a solid, highly dependable foundation for your business. Additionally, powerful tools give you greater control over your servers and streamline configuration and management tasks.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Improved Storage Solutions

The ability to quickly access information is more critical today than ever before. The foundation for this high-speed access is based on file services and network attached storage (NAS). Microsoft storage solutions are at the core of providing high-performance and highly available file services and NAS. The release version of Windows Server 2008 introduced many improvements in storage technologies. Windows Server 2008 R2 includes additional improvements that enhance the performance, availability, and manageability of storage solutions.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Improved Management of File Services

Storage is no longer a marginal expense. Nor is managing storage any longer simply about volume and availability; organizations need to manage their data more effectively as well as more efficiently. Only by gaining insight into their data can companies reduce the cost of storing, maintaining, and managing data. Only by enforcing company policies and knowing how storage is utilized can administrators efficiently use their storage and mitigate the risks of leaking data. The next frontier for administrators is to be able to manage data based on business value.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Remote Desktop Services

Remote Desktop Services in Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard provides a security-enhanced, easy-to-manage platform for delivering access to centrally managed applications and resources from the Internet by using HTTPS; you do not need to provide access through a virtual private network (VPN) or by opening unwanted ports on firewalls.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Web and Applications Platform

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard provides organizations with the ability to deliver rich Web-based experiences efficiently and effectively, with improved administration and diagnostics, advanced development and application tools, and lower infrastructure costs.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard is a powerful Web application and services platform. The Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5 in Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard delivers a completely modular, extensible Web server with expanded application hosting, while retaining excellent compatibility and solving key customer challenges.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Virtualization

Many organizations find that patch management, resource utilization maintenance costs, and server sprawl are among their biggest challenges. Server virtualization technologies, including Windows Server Hyper-V and enhancements to Remote Desktop Services, can help meet all of these challenges by helping you consolidate your resources and realize significant infrastructure and management cost savings.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Reduced Administrative Effort for Administrative Tasks

Reducing administrative effort for day-to-day administrative tasks is another key design goal for Windows Server 2008 R2. Many of the management consoles used to manage Windows Server 2008 R2 have been updated or completely redesigned to help reduce your administrative effort. Some of the prominent updated and redesigned management consoles are listed in the following table with descriptions of the improvements.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:30%">Improved remote administration

Remote administration of server computers is essential to any efficient data center. It is very rare that server computers are administered locally. Windows Server 2008 R2 introduces a number of improvements in remote administration, including improved remote management through graphical management consoles and improved remote management from command-line and automated scripts.

Today, 64-bit processors have become the standard for systems ranging from the most scalable servers to desktop PCs. Technology changes rapidly and 64-bit processors are now the norm in the business world of today. Virtually all new Hewlett Packard and other servers ship with 64-bit processors. You can take full advantage of these systems by using 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows products and Hewlett Packard Servers.

The main differences between the 32-bit versions of Windows Vista and the 64-bit versions of Windows Vista relate to memory accessibility, memory management, and enhanced security features. The security features that are available in the 64-bit versions of Windows Vista include the following:
Enhanced Secuirty with Kernel Patch Protection, support for hardware-backed Data Execution Protection (DEP), and mandatory driver signing
Removal of support for 32-bit drivers
Removal of the old 16-bit legacy subsystem

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:50%">Advantages of 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows Servers

64-bit systems are much faster than the older 32-bit and legacy 16-bit systems because they process more data per clock cycle, which provides higher performing and scalable computing solutions. They also offer direct access to more virtual and physical memory than 32-bit systems which results in further performance advantages.

Faster I/O (input/output) speeds to things like hard disk drives and other storage devices. These features can greatly increase system performance.

The ability to access physical memory (RAM) that is above the 4-gigabyte (GB) range. This physical memory is not addressable by 32-bit versions of legacy operating systems. The ability to address more physical memory lets Windows Vista minimize the time that is required to swap processes in and out of physical memory. Therefore, Windows Vista can manage processes more efficiently. This memory management feature helps improve the overall performance of Windows Servers.

New 64-bit servers are best suited for most new servers because they provide a platform for scalable and high-performing native 64-bit applications while still supporting most legacy 32-bit applications without emulation on the same system.

Servers with 32-bit processors are already becoming legacy systems. New servers should be deployed with a 64-bit Server only when a compelling reason exists that prevents taking full advantage of the hardware.

<h2 style="text-align:center "font-size:50%">Remember, Support for Windows 2000 is ending

On July 13th, 2010, support for Windows 2000 Server ends. Windows Sever 2008 should be in your plans to migrate to your new network operaing system.

PracticeMaster automatically suggests which client an e-mail should link to, based on e-mails in that client’s file. Create fees, calendar entries, and journal records from any e-mail. E-mail integration in PracticeMaster works with or without Microsoft Exchange Server®, locally or remotely hosted.

Use stopwatch timers to track time spent on phone calls, Internet research, client meetings and more. Stopwatch timers may be combined to create one billing entry for your work throughout the day. Manage several stopwatches at a time as you multi-task. You can easily set minimum time increments for billing entries, then automatically create fees or costs (to integrate to Tabs3 Billing software) from the time you track, appointments on your calendar, Internet research, e-mails, and documents that you create or review. Cost transactions can optionally post to QuickBooks®

Manage Documents and Find Them Fast.

Document management capabilities in PracticeMaster allow you to link any file to any client or case so that you can find them easily. Built-in document history tracking lets you track when changes were made to a document, and by whom. You can easily bring scanned documents into PracticeMaster by using PaperPort® imaging software, helping to make the image readily retrievable at any time. PracticeMaster toolbar plug-ins allow you to save documents in Word, Excel, or Adobe Acrobat/Reader as Document Management records.

There are many serious misconceptions about fragmentation which, if believed, can lead to significant computer damage. Debunking these myths could save your system or network.

Fragmentation is one of the most serious problems that plague computers around the globe. It accounts for billions in lost revenue and production. It is also one of the leading causes of a wide range of common computer problems, system failures, and early hardware replacement. Why don’t users and IT departments take more action to protect themselves against fragmentation? The following defrag myths may explain why.

Myth: My system or network doesn’t have fragmentation.

Wrong. It is estimated that there are over 700 million PCs actively-in-use in the world today, and every single one of them has fragmentation issues to one degree or another. The reason? Fragmentation is an unavoidable by-product of all Window’s-based operating systems. Thus your system or network is basically “born” with this defect from the beginning – a situation basically unknown to many users.

Myth: I already have defrag software already pre-installed in my operating system.

This myth is, perhaps, more responsible than any other for the many misconceptions about defragmentation software. There IS a kind of defragmentation software that comes pre-installed with many operating systems – but it is a technological dinosaur. Don’t be misled: There is no comparison between the modern versions of this technology and what comes pre-installed. The best advice is to download a copy of a modern defrag software and see the differences for yourself (see below).

Myth: Defragmenting my network during work hours will causes disruptions in performance.

This is a major and legitimate concern among IT professionals. Administrators cannot afford to take chances during the workday, and are often forced to work nights and weekends in order to do systems maintenance (like defragmentation). But choosing a high performance defragmenter that is specifically designed for networks will allow a systems administrator to defrag the system without affecting productivity. Companies such as Diskeeper (www.diskeeper.com) make highly advanced network defragmentation software which is completely transparent when running in the background.

,i>
Myth: I have to replace my computer due to slow performance.

Not necessarily. Fragmentation is the scattering of data and files across the hard drive. As fragmentation builds up, pieces of data become increasingly scattered, and the read/write head takes longer and longer to write and retrieve data. This shows up as sluggish, slow performance, and eventually freeze-ups and systems failure. It is very possible, however, that a defrag of the system with a high quality defragmenter will restore your ailing system or network to maximum performance.

Myth: Using defrag software is a hassle.

Another misconception stemming directly from the use of the pre-installed version. Unfortunately, it’s a lot like comparing a horse-and-buggy to a race car. The bundled version makes defragmentation a hassle because it is indeed S-L-O-W. It takes forever to do a not-very-good-job of defragmenting your drive or server. Modern defragmentation software is lightening fast by comparison and the best ones are so completely automatic that you can basically forget about them and not worry about fragmentation issues any longer once they’re installed.

Myth: Defrag software is expensive.

The best companies have a full line-up of defragmentation products that one can choose from online. Whether you’re a home user, small business, government agency, or huge company with hundreds of servers and thousands of workstations, you can find a download to suit your needs and give the software a trial run. The cost savings could potentially be enormous. Research shows that the resultant increase in productivity, the reduction of down-time, and the increased longevity of hardware make the relatively low cost of defragmentation software insignificant by comparison.
Don’t let a myth prevent you from finding out whether your system is running at peak performance or not. The best recommendation is to download a copy of defrag software and see for yourself. It just might make a tremendous difference.

Recently, I read an article By Armen Keteyian on the CBS News Web Site dated April 19, 2009 which described a serious security problem when office digital copiers are traded in or sold. Since 2002, nearly every digital copier built contains a hard drive which stores a digital image of every document copied, scanned, or emailed by the copy machine.

Each copier with a hard drive is packed with highly-personal or sensitive data, such as client records, social security numbers, and other sensitive information hat represents a pot of gold to someone in the identify theft business.

This past February, CBS News went with John Juntunen, president of Digital Copier Security that has developed software called “INFOSWEEP” that can scrub all the data on hard drives, to a warehouse in New Jersey, one of 25 across the country, to see how hard it would be to buy a used copier loaded with documents. It turns out … it’s pretty easy and the cost for the copiers was about $300 each.

It took Juntunen just 30 minutes to pull the hard drives out of the copiers. Then, using a forensic software program available for free on the Internet, he ran a scan – downloading tens of thousands of documents in less than 12 hours.

One copy machine – from Affinity Health Plan, a New York insurance company, provided 300 pages of individual medical records. They included everything from drug prescriptions, to blood test results, to a cancer diagnosis. A potentially serious breach of federal privacy law.

Another machine from a New York construction company, spit out design plans for a building near Ground Zero in Manhattan; 95 pages of pay stubs with names, addresses and social security numbers; and $40,000 in copied checks.

All the major manufacturers told us they offer security or encryption packages on their products. One product from Sharp automatically erases an image from the hard drive. It costs $500.

But evidence is that many businesses are unwilling to pay for such protection, and that the average American is completely unaware of the dangers posed by digital copiers.

Fraudulent emails which are often called phishing emails, which are designed to steal your identity or to plant a virus, Trojan, or other malware on your computer. They ask for personal data, or direct you to Web sites or phone numbers to call where they ask you to provide personal data. This article is from http://www.microsoft.com/protect/fraud/phishing/symptoms.aspx and provides a useful and detailed information on these phishing emails and what they look like.

Phishing e-mail messages take a number of forms:

They might appear to come from your bank or financial institution, a company you regularly do business with, such as Microsoft, or from your social networking site.

They might appear to be from someone you know. Spear phishing is a targeted form of phishing in which an e-mail message might look like it comes from your employer, or from a colleague who might send an e-mail message to everyone in the company, such as the head of human resources or IT.

They might ask you to make a phone call. Phone phishing scams direct you to call a customer support phone number. A person or an audio response unit waits to take your account number, personal identification number, password, or other valuable personal data. The phone phisher might claim that your account will be closed or other problems could occur if you don’t respond.

They might include official-looking logos and other identifying information taken directly from legitimate Web sites, and they might include convincing details about your personal information that scammers found on your social networking pages.

They might include links to spoofed Web sites where you are asked to enter personal information.

To make these phishing e-mail messages look even more legitimate, the scam artists may place a link in them that appears to go to the legitimate Web site (1), but actually takes you to a phony scam site (2) or possibly a pop-up window that looks exactly like the official site.
Here are a few phrases to look for if you think an e-mail message is a phishing scam.

“Verify your account.”

Businesses should not ask you to send passwords, login names, Social Security numbers, or other personal information through e-mail.
If you receive an e-mail message from Microsoft asking you to update your credit card information, do not respond: this is a phishing scam.

“You have won the lottery.”
The lottery scam is a common phishing scam known as advanced fee fraud. One of the most common forms of advanced fee fraud is a message that claims that you have won a large sum of money, or that a person will pay you a large sum of money for little or no work on your part. The lottery scam often includes references to big companies, such as Microsoft. There is no Microsoft lottery.

“If you don’t respond within 48 hours, your account will be closed.”
These messages convey a sense of urgency so that you’ll respond immediately without thinking. A phishing e-mail message might even claim that your response is required because your account might have been compromised.

What does a phishing link look like?
Sometimes phishing e-mails direct you to spoofed web sites. Here’s an example of the kind of phrase you might see in an e-mail message that directs you to a phishing Web site:

“Click the link below to gain access to your account.”

HTML-formatted messages can contain links or forms that you can fill out just as you’d fill out a form on a Web site. Phishing links that you are urged to click in e-mail messages, on Web sites, or even in instant messages may contain all or part of a real company’s name and are usually masked, meaning that the link you see does not take you to that address but somewhere different, usually an illegitimate Web site.

Here is an example of what a phishing scam in an e-mail message might look like.

Example of a masked Web address:

Notice in the following example that resting (but not clicking) the mouse pointer on the link reveals the real Web address, as shown in the box with the yellow background. The string of cryptic numbers looks nothing like the company’s Web address, which is a suspicious sign.

Con artists also use Web addresses that resemble the name of a well-known company but are slightly altered by adding, omitting, or transposing letters. For example, the address “www.microsoft.com” could appear instead as:

www.micosoft.com

www.mircosoft.com

www.verify-microsoft.com
